What to Look for in a Baby Carrier

When it comes to baby carriers, the choices can be overwhelming. They all claim to be the best baby carrier for back pain; however, that’s not always the case. Here are a few things to consider:

  • Material – The best material is lightweight and breathable. You also want something that has padding, especially a padded waist belt.
  • Washability – Babies are messy. You want it to wash easily and not warp or shrink. This is a bonus feature, but not necessary for back pain.
  • Value – They can be a little pricey so you want one that can be used for years to come. Don’t think a higher price means better support though.
  • Weight restrictions – Not all carriers are for newborns to toddler stage. Some require a minimum weight and others will not work for bigger babies.
  • Support – you want ample hip and back support because if it is not comfortable, you won’t see the value of using it. This is the biggest feature when dealing with lumbar pain. Extra padded shoulder straps are also helpful for weight distribution.

Here are some pros for this Ergobaby carrier:

Pros:

  • Padded lumbar support offers you the extra support you need around your lower back. It prevents the strap from digging in or causing pressure.

  • You will also find extra padded shoulder straps that make this the best baby carrier for shoulder pain. You can wear it either crossed or backpack style to further help with your pain.
  • There is a stretchy pocket upfront that is easy to reach. If can hold your credit card, pacifiers, or anything that you want to have easy access to.
  • It is made with a cool mesh and is very breathable.
  • The nursing-friendly design means that you can nurse as the baby needs, even in public, and still feel covered. Use the nursing cover and you have even more coverage.
  • It works between 7 and 45 pounds for your baby.
  • This will last a long long time and is machine washable.
  • No insert required for small babies.

Here are some of the things that you might want to consider before you grab this baby carrier:

Cons

  • This carrier is more expensive than some of the other brands. But, it does have a lot more features than the other brands.
  • The size of the carrier can make it bulky and hard to store when not in use. The lumber support padding does make it really hard to fold up and can make it hard to wash and dry.
  • It can be hard to adjust on your own. Most people need two people to get it adjusted correctly.

All in all, the Ergobaby Carrier is an excellent choice to help with your lower back pain.

2. LillieBaby Complete Baby Carrier

If you are looking for a baby carrier with lumbar support, you cannot go wrong with this Lillebaby Carrier. I have this one and out of all the ones I gotten in the past, this is the best baby carrier for back support that I’ve found.

It offers tons of carry positions, way more than other carriers, has a wide waist belt with a lumbar support, comfortable fabric and shoulder straps.

It is made with 100% natural cotton, and is BPA-free, lead-free, phthalate-free, and latex-free! It is a great carrier for all babies and caregivers.

Pros

  • The material is super lightweight which means it is breathable for both you and your baby.
  • With this carrier, you have six different options to carry your baby. The more options mean the better your back will feel. There is one carrying method that will feel good to you!
  • The extra lumbar support feature is my favorite feature and why I think it is the baby carrier with best back support.
  • Two-way straps to help further support your back whether you back carry or front carry. It also comes with an extended torso, giving even more support to your back.
  • You will also find adjustable side panels so your baby’s hips will also be comfortable as well.
  • Incredibly easy to adjust on your own without any help. This is crucial for stay-at-home moms!
  • It works great for babies with 7 to 45 pounds.
  • The 3-D mesh fabric offers a nice cool feel to it, so you and your baby won’t get as hot.

This truly is an amazing baby carrier for back pain, one of the best. However, there are a few cons I need to mention:

Cons

  • The lumbar support is nice, but it is not attached. It is a separate attachment which means more hassle if you want to adjust. However, the support from it is amazing.
  • If you have a preemie or baby under seven pounds, you will need an infant insert, which means more money.
  • The waistband is wider than other baby carriers and may be an adjustment for some. I prefer it but others might not like it, especially petite women.

The LillieBaby Complete is one of my favorites for supporting your back while babywearing. It is also my two under two must haves you can’t live without!

3. BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier

Another one of the baby carriers with back support is the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier. It is one of the structured baby carriers that helps distribute weight evenly between your entire back, helping with less pain.

Here are some more amazing features of this baby carrier:

Pros

  • I really enjoy how lightweight this carrier is as it is so easy to wear. It has a two part design, making it really easy to get in and out of, especially with a sleeping baby all by yourself!
  • This does have the breathable 3D mesh you’ll want to have. You will not get too hot wearing this nor will you have to worry about the baby getting too sweaty.
  • It is machine washable, but you don’t want to tumble dry it.
  • This carrier offers amazing support for you and the baby. It has the lower back support, padded shoulder straps, and a mid-back support.
  • The main reason that this carrier made the list is that it is perfect for babies between 8 and 35 pounds.

Let’s switch over to the things we didn’t love about this carrier. The list is small; however, it does have some things that you might want to take into consideration:

Cons

  • The biggest con is that there are only two different carrying positions. Most have at least 4, with some having 6 different carrying positions!
  • It is not really for toddlers as the maximum weight is 35 pounds.
  • Because it has the two part design, some parents found it to be more complicated than other carriers.

The BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier is a great option for newborns and can provide great support for your back.

4. Infantino Baby Carrier

This Infantino Baby Carrier is not only a cheaper option, but it also really good for back pain! It is a super lightweight option perfect for little ones.

  • Comes with adjustable shoulder straps and a waist strap so you can have a lot of back support. The shoulder straps are also padded.
  • No need for an infant insert with this baby carrier! Suitable for babies eight pounds to 32 pounds.
  • This is the cheapest option for baby carriers, perfect for a moms on a budget!
  • We had this option with our first baby and it was perfect for both me (5’8″) and my husband (6’3″).

Cons

  • There are no pockets, which is more of an inconvenience than anything.
  • Less padding than other carriers. Some parents complain it gets uncomfortable after two hours, unlike the other carriers.
  • Not a 3D mesh, so if you sweat easily, you and your baby will probably get pretty hot after a while in it.

Overall, if you are on a very strict budget and want a baby carrier with back support, this is the baby carrier for you.

  • Comes with a removable hood to protect your little one from the sun.

Cons

  • While it is 100% cotton, it is not mesh fabric. Some prefer cotton, some prefer mesh, it is up to you to decide.
  • It does not have as much support in the waist for your helps as other carriers with the added lumbar support.

How to Prevent Getting Back Pain

No matter what carrier you choose, there are some things that you can do to prevent back pain. If you already have a carrier that you love but are getting back pain, try these things:

  • Wear your baby up high. Ideally, you should be able to kiss the top of your baby’s head just by lowering your head.
  • Keep your baby as close to your body as possible. If your baby is not snug against your body or is moving and swaying when you move, it is not tight enough. Not only is that not safe, but it will also cause serious back pain.
  • If possible, wear your baby on your hip. This is only possible for older babies and in carriers designed for side and back wear. This can help distribute the weight to help with lower back pain and strain as well.
  • Make sure that your waistband is secure and tight. You don’t want it so tight that it is digging into your skin, causing discomfort, or preventing you from moving around freely. You do want it tight enough that your carrier isn’t moving around, and it is supporting the weight of your baby.
  • Check your shoulder straps to ensure that they are evenly adjusted. Having one strap tighter than the other will cause the weight to unevenly distribute which will cause discomfort and back pain.
