DIY Herbal Diaper Salve Recipe
I started making this DIY herbal diaper salve on a random Tuesday when my son had a rash that just would not quit.
I had already tried two different store-bought creams, and while they helped a little, nothing was really doing the job.
I was studying herbs, and finally decided to try to make my own homemade diaper cream that used herbs that actually support the skin.
This homemade diaper salve has become one of those things I always have a batch of ready to go, and it makes such a thoughtful gift for a new mom too!
If you’ve been looking for a DIY diaper balm you can actually feel good about putting on your baby’s skin, this is the one!
Simple ingredients, gentle herbs, and no guessing about what’s in it 🙂 Here’s how to make it!

Herbal Benefits
This homemade herbal diaper salve works because every single ingredient in it is doing something important:
- Almond oil is deeply moisturizing and absorbs well into skin. It’s gentle enough for sensitive baby skin and makes a great base for the infusion.
- Marshmallow root is incredibly soothing. It has a naturally slippery, coating quality that helps calm irritated and inflamed skin, which is exactly what you want for diaper rash! It is what I use in my homemade eczema balm just for this purpose!
- Lavender is one of those herbs that does a lot of quiet work. It’s calming for the skin and has gentle properties that make it a great addition to any baby-safe blend. I like infusing it rather than using essential oils on little ones.
- Calendula is probably the most well-known herb for skin care! It’s incredibly gentle and has been used for generations to soothe irritated, chapped, and sensitive skin. It’s a star ingredient in this homemade diaper balm! I can’t live without calendula!
- Chamomile rounds everything out beautifully. It’s soft, calming, and gentle on delicate skin. Another herb that has been used for a long time for skincare.
- Beeswax creates the protective barrier that makes this a true salve. It sits on top of the skin to help shield it from moisture, which is exactly what you need in a diaper area.
- Essential oils are optional here, but if you choose to add them and you’re using this on a baby, just be sure to research safe options and dilution rates first! I don’t usually put any in unless it is for an older baby between 1-2 years old.

DIY Herbal Diaper Salve Recipe
Makes: approximately 6 ounces
Ingredients
- 1 cup almond oil
- ¼ cup marshmallow root
- ¼ cup lavender
- ¼ cup calendula
- ¼ cup chamomile
- 1 cup infused oil
- ¼ cup beeswax
- 2-5 drops essential oil (optional, don’t use with young babies)
- 2 oz containers

Instructions
Add each herb into a glass jar. Pour the carrier oil onto the top. Leave for 4 to 6 weeks, shaking every couple of days. Then strain.

Add the infused oil and beeswax into a heat safe glass container. Slowly melt it in a double broiler or in the microwave, stirring in between.

Once completely melted wait until it reaches 135 degrees F or lower, then add in your essential oils (if using) and stir once again.

Pour into your containers.

Wait until it is full harden before putting on the lid. Then enjoy!

Notes
- Essential oils are optional. If you are using with babies, be sure to follow safety and be cautious.
- You can use any carrier oil you want, I just used almond oil.
- Store your finished containers at room temperature, away from direct heat or sunlight. It should last between 6-12 months when stored properly. Always use a clean finger or spoon when you use to further keep it safe to use 🙂
- This recipe makes around 6 ounces total, so you’ll have enough to fill a few small containers and share one with a friend!

How to Use It
Apply a thin layer of this DIY diaper salve at each diaper change, especially if you’re noticing any redness or irritation starting.
You don’t need a lot, just enough to create a light protective layer!
As always, do a small patch test first, and if your baby’s skin reacts in any way, discontinue use and check with your pediatrician.
