5 Self-Care Habits That Will Change Your Motherhood Experience
Here are 5 self-care habits that completely changed my motherhood experience. Everything became so much easier to manage when I did these crucial self-care tips.
Motherhood is a beautiful yet demanding journey. While nurturing your children, it’s easy to lose sight of your own needs.
However, practicing consistent self-care will help you feel more grounded, energized, and joyful.
I got to a point in my motherhood journey where I found little joy being a mom and in day to day life.
Once I started doing these 5 things down below for my self-care, everything changed. I started to feel more life myself again and things got so much easier to manage.
So, I wanted to share these top self-care habits moms can easily fit into their daily lifestyle to be a happier, healthier mom!
5 Crucial Self-Care Habits for Moms
Here are the five intentional self-care habits I try to do every day. When I do, I am a happier mom and can manage the stress of motherhood.
Create a Morning Ritual
Starting your day intentionally sets the tone for everything that follows.
A morning ritual can be as simple as:
- Sipping a warm cup of tea or cup of lemon water
- Journaling for five minutes
- Doing a quick stretch or breathing exercise

This habit gives you a moment of peace and clarity before jumping into the day’s demands.
I am not a morning person at all, but I found when I do my morning ritual, the day goes a lot better. When I forget, I’m usually grumpy all day long.

Set Boundaries Around Your Time
Moms often feel pressured to say “yes” to everything. I felt that way my entire life.
I learned that setting boundaries is an act of self-care. While it did take a lot of practice, saying no is one of the best things I did for myself. And you can do it too!
You can protect your time by:
- Saying no to activities that overwhelm your schedule. (for me as a socially anxious mom, that is saying no to most mom group activities)
- Blocking out “me time” in your calendar.
- Delegating tasks to your partner or family members who can help. (If you don’t have family around, consider hiring a maid for an hour or so on apps to help)
When you set limits, you create space for rest and activities that recharge you.
I’ve noticed when I say no to things I know will overwhelm me, even my pain and body feels so much better too!

Move Your Body Daily
Exercise is not just about staying fit; it’s about releasing stress and boosting your mood.
You can incorporate movement into your day by:
- Taking a walk with your stroller or kids.
- Following a short yoga or Pilates video.
- Dancing to your favorite playlist. (I do this when I get overwhelmed by the kids or the messy house and it is a game-changer)!

Even 10 minutes a day can make a big difference in your energy and mindset.
Connect with Your Support System
Motherhood can feel isolating, but you’re not alone.
If you feel alone or don’t have anyone, try connecting with:
- Other moms in your community or online groups. (Check out the peanut app)
- A trusted friend or family member for regular check-ins.
- Your partner.
Building a support network provides emotional relief and helps you navigate challenges with greater confidence.
Even a therapist or virtual doula was so crucial for me!
Practice Mindful Gratitude
Shifting your focus to gratitude can have a profound impact on your perspective. Research has shown how effective gratitude is for anyone!
Try these simple practices:
- Write down three things you’re grateful for every night.
- Reflect on one positive parenting moment each day.
- Share gratitude with your kids by making it a family habit. (I usually try to do this at dinner time or when I tuck them into bed.)

This practice fosters positivity, helping you savor motherhood’s precious moments.
Final Thoughts
Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential, and it doesn’t have to be taking a bath. There are so many things you can do with your kids present to take care of yourself.
These habits aren’t about adding more to your plate but about prioritizing what truly matters—your well-being.
When you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to care for your family. Embrace these habits and see how they transform your motherhood experience.
