2nd Trimester Essentials to Keep You Comfortable and Grounded

The second trimester often brings a breath of fresh air. For many mamas, the nausea begins to ease, energy levels rise, and that long-awaited pregnancy glow may finally make an appearance.

But with new comfort comes new changes—your body grows quickly, and you may find yourself needing extra support in places you didn’t expect.

As a birth and postpartum doula (and a mama who’s been through it), I created this list of 2nd trimester essentials to support you physically, emotionally, and spiritually through this season.

I’ve used these to help support my pregnancies during the 2nd trimester, or I fully recommend them now after becoming a doula. I hope they help you along your journey!

1. Clothing That Fits Your Changing Body

This is the trimester when everything suddenly stops fitting. Even the comfiest of jeans or bras can start to feel like torture devices, I know they did for me!

But that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on a whole new wardrobe.

Here’s what I recommend:

  • Maternity soft stretchy pants, especially ones you can keep using postpartum. (These are the 2 piece comfy sets I still wear to this day and throughout my entire pregnancy/postpartum).
  • Supportive bras or nursing bras (I found a bundle on Amazon that was incredibly comfortable and lasted well into postpartum).
  • Loose-fitting tops and dresses you can size up in instead of buying a ton of maternity-specific items. I found maternity clothing was more expensive than regular clothing, and I likely wouldn’t wear any of it after I gave birth. I chose just to purchase regular clothing – that was still comfortable being pregnant – and sized up.
  • A belly band for support and to keep wearing your regular jeans a bit longer.

Doula tip: Secondhand is your best friend here. Check Mercari or local consignment shops for maternity jeans, dresses, and belly bands.

2. A Pregnancy Pillow That Actually Works for You

s your belly grows, getting quality sleep becomes trickier. I loved my wedge pillow—it was small but mighty in keeping me comfortable at night for one pregnancy and my C-shaped pillow for my last pregnancy.

A good pillow supports healthy sleep posture and helps relieve pressure from your hips and lower back.

3. Skincare That Nourishes Your Growing Skin

You can’t prevent stretch marks completely—but you can keep your skin nourished and hydrated.

My favorite pregnancy-safe picks:

  • Good Night Lotion (with magnesium—so good for sleep too!)
  • A gentle, unscented moisturizer if your skin is sensitive. I love using my tallow balm.

Apply after your shower or before bed—daily rituals matter.

4. Tools for Easing Back and Hip Pain

As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts. Your hips, back, and pelvis start taking on the extra work.

These were my go-to’s:

Back and hip discomfort is common—but it doesn’t mean you have to suffer through it.

5. Iron and Energy Support

Around the end of your second trimester, your iron needs increase. Many moms start feeling sluggish, dizzy, or even breathless.

I was tired all the time, but iron supplements made me so constipated—until I found Energy Plus by Earthley. It gave me energy and kept things moving.

6. Mental and Emotional Support

You may feel better physically, but mentally, the second trimester can bring up anxiety, overthinking, or worry about the unknown.

What helps:

  • Journaling or prayer journaling
  • Pregnancy meditation apps or Bible-based affirmations
  • Prenatal yoga or stretching with worship music

Your peace matters. Give your nervous system and spirit space to rest.

7. Vitamins, Hydration, and Nourishment

Keep up with:

Pregnancy hunger is real. Nourish yourself with intention—not pressure. It will really help with preventing gestational diabetes.

8. Supportive Footwear

Swollen feet? Achy arches?

Try:

  • Cushioned sneakers with good arch support
  • Adjustable sandals (Birkenstock-style is a win)
  • Compression socks if you’re on your feet a lot

Comfort is not vanity—it’s wisdom.
