3rd Trimester Essentials

The third trimester is a sacred season. Your belly is growing, your baby is almost here, and your mind is full of to-dos and tender anticipation. It’s exciting—but it can also be physically intense and emotionally overwhelming.

As a doula and a mama myself, I know this final stretch of pregnancy requires more than just checklists. You need comfort. You need calm. You need support that wraps around you like a soft blanket—body, mind, and soul.

Below is a my list of 3rd trimester essentials to help you feel more prepared, more grounded, and more at peace as you get ready to meet your baby.

1. Maternity Support Belt (Your New Best Friend)

By the third trimester, your belly is doing some serious heavy lifting—and so is your back. A maternity or pelvic support belt gives your body the extra strength it needs.

Why I love it:

  • Relieves lower back and pelvic pain
  • Helps improve posture (especially on long days)
  • Makes everyday tasks more manageable

Doula tip: You might not think you need one… until you try it. Then you’ll wonder how you did without it. That’s what happened to me, that’s why I recommend it during the 2nd trimester as well.

2. Your Hospital Bag (Yes, It’s Time)

Even if you’re weeks away from your due date, packing your hospital bag early gives you peace of mind. You’re not just prepping for labor—you’re caring for your future postpartum self.

What to include:

  • Comfy robe and nursing-friendly clothes
  • Toiletries (lip balm, toothbrush, hairbrush, etc.)
  • Baby onesies and a soft blanket
  • Postpartum pads and a few pairs of mesh undies (trust me)

Reminder: It’s not about packing perfectly. It’s about feeling prepared.

3. Breathable, Comfy Clothes

When you’re carrying a full-grown human, every outfit should feel like a sigh of relief. Maternity leggings, soft bras, and loose dresses will become your new go-to.

Options I love:

  • Clothes that you can wear postpartum (I wore this comfy 2 piece set and still wear them!)
  • Flowy tops and easy-access nursing tanks
  • Stretchy underwear that doesn’t dig in

Don’t worry about dressing “cute.” Dress in what feels like kindness to your body.

4. Birthing Ball (Relief + Preparation)

Also called a stability or exercise ball, this tool is magic for your hips, posture, and labor prep.

Why it’s essential:

  • Eases tension in your lower back and hips
  • Helps baby settle into optimal position
  • Can be used during labor for movement and support

Doula tip: Start using it now while watching TV or working—it makes a bigger difference than you’d expect!

5. Tools for Better Sleep

Sleep can feel impossible as your belly grows and your brain races. This is where a few small changes can go a long way.

What helps:

Sleep may be interrupted—but it can still be restorative.

6. Support for Circulation + Swelling

Carrying a baby 24/7 is hard work. Swollen feet, achy calves, and restless legs are all too common.

Circulation boosters:

  • Compression socks (especially if you’re on your feet a lot)
  • Herbal foot soaks or Epsom salt baths
  • Elevating your feet every chance you get

Little rituals make a big difference.

7. Nutrition, Hydration & Iron Support

Your body is working overtime. Now’s the time to fuel it intentionally.

Third trimester nutrition tips:

Talk to your provider about iron around this time—they’ll likely test your levels and recommend support if needed.

8. Red Raspberry Leaf (For Labor Prep)

This herb has long been loved for helping tone the uterus and prepare it for birth. I just really didn’t like the tea, so this Red Raspberry Leaf Extract was a lifesaver.

I noticed a difference in labor—smoother, quicker, and easier recovery.

9. Perineal Care Prep

Whether you have a vaginal or cesarean birth, caring for your body postpartum starts before baby arrives.

The third trimester is the time I like to make sure I have things that will help me quickly recover after giving birth.

Must-haves:

Doula tip: Make a little postpartum kit now—you’ll be grateful you did.

10. Your Birth Plan

The third trimester is when your birth vision starts coming to life. Whether you want an epidural or a water birth, it’s important to put your preferences on paper.

Include:

  • Pain relief options
  • Labor environment (lighting, music, aromatherapy)
  • Immediate postpartum and newborn care
  • Who you want in the room

Your plan isn’t about control—it’s about clarity. And that brings peace.
